I used to read a whole lot of animal stories by Joseph Chippperfield. ther e was one called Dark Fury (I think) about a wonderful black horse who lived in the wilds in Nevada and couldn't be tamed (and all that one man wild animal enduring tribulations and getting back together with one man).
I can just see him in this picture, all wild and noble with flying mane and tail :)
